Weather Service confirms 3 tornadoes touched down in the D.C. area

WASHINGTON, DC - The National Weather Service has confirmed that three EF-0 tornadoes touched down in Virginia and D.C. during Thursday's severe storms. A report released Friday found that damaged cherry trees in the Tidal Basin were caused by an EF-0 tornado that originated in Arlington, VA. The National Park Service reports that 11 cherry trees were destroyed and 30 were damaged. Video from a park ranger shows the storm moving through the Tidal Basin Thursday evening. The Weather Service released preliminary reports Thursday night showing an EF-0 tornado touched down in Herndon, VA near Dulles airport, and in the District near Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling. Winds from all tornadoes ranged from 60 to 70 mph.
