WASHINGTON, D.C — DC Fire and EMS responded to a call in the 2900 block of 2nd Street, SE for a report of a fire this morning around 7:45. Two people jumped to safety from a third story apartment.
Truck Company 16 arrived within four minutes and found a fire on the second floor of a three story building. There were residents trapped on the third floor. DC FEMS used the aerial ladder to rescue two children and an adult. The 21-year-old, along with 12 and 5-year-olds, were transported to an area hospital for observation. The two residents that jumped were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. An 8-year-old was also transported for observation.
The fire was extinguished quickly, but one firefighter suffered burns to her hands while manning a fire hose to fight the blaze. She was treated at a burn center and released. Twenty-nine people were displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross.
The investigation into the fire revealed that it was accidental.
