HAYMARKET, Va. - Prince William County Police say they are investigating after an officer shot and killed a 15-year-old boy.

Police say the shooting happened around 10:45 a.m. Friday morning in the 6800 block of Hartzell Hill Lane.

Officers initially responded to a residence to investigate a possible hostage situation.

Police say as officers were responding, they received information that one of the individuals involved had a bomb strapped to his chest and was holding a family member hostage.

When officers arrived, police say they saw a boy in front of the residence.

During the encounter, police say the boy brandished a crowbar and began walking toward the officers in a threatening manner.

Despite multiple commands to drop the crowbar, officers say the boy refused.

At that point, police say one of the officers fired their department-issued gun towards the boy, hitting him in the upper body.

Police say officers provided first aid to the boy until EMS arrived, but the boy was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured.

Police say the investigation is open and on-going.
