PRINCE WILLIAM CO. – Police arrested a man in a fatal alcohol-related hit and run in Gainesville Sunday morning, officials say.

Police say they responded to the area of James Madison Highway and Thoroughfare Road to investigate a single vehicle crash. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which left the roadway and rolled.

A backseat passenger, identified by police as Jose Romero Maldonado, 38, of Warrenton, was not wearing a seatbelt and ejected from the vehicle. Police say he was pronounced dead at the scene. A front seat passenger, a 30-year-old man from Warrenton, who was wearing a seatbelt sustained minor injuries. He was transported to a hospital and has since been released, police say.

The 21-year-old driver, Vicente Vides Vasquez, of Warrenton, has been arrested and charged, authorities say. Police say they located Vasquez around 1 p.m. walking alongside a roadway. The accused was not injured.

Police say alcohol and speed are believed to be contributing factors in the fatal collision. Vasquez is charged with involuntary manslaughter, hit and run causing death, and driving without a license, police say. He is being held without bond.
