DERWOOD, MD – The Montgomery County Police Department is investigating the undetermined death of a man who attended an underage drinking party in Derwood, Maryland. The incident occurred in the 5800 block of Winegrove Court on Sunday morning.
According to officials, police were called to the 5800 block of Winegrove Court around 2:38 a.m. on Sunday morning for a possible drowning. When officers arrived, they found Diego Padilla, 25, unresponsive in the home’s swimming pool. At this time, police do not suspect foul play in the man’s death. The exact cause of death is undetermined, pending results from an autopsy by the Medical Examiner’s Office in Baltimore.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Padilla was present at an underage drinking party which was hosted by two adult brothers who reside at the home. People at the party contacted 9-1-1 after they found Padilla in the pool. He was transported to the hospital where he later died.
The party did have underage drinking. The hosts of the party initially refused to let officers from the Alcohol Initiatives Section into the home, but they received permission from the homeowner who came to the house and let the officers in. After investigating, officials report that there were several extremely intoxicated people outside of the home. They also found large quantities of alcoholic beverages on the rear deck of the house. According to the police, ten adults and one juvenile were charged with possession of alcohol by persons under 21.
