PRINCE WILLIAM CO. – Police continue to investigate a fatal hit-and-run that happened in Prince William County Tuesday.

Investigators say a County Park Ranger was driving on Fraley Boulevard near Graham Park Road in Dumfries when he saw a man, identified as 40-year-old Alvin Smith, lying in the middle of the road.

The ranger pulled off to the side of the road to check on the Smith’s welfare. That’s when, police say, a vehicle struck the pedestrian.

The vehicle stopped at first, but then proceeded to drive off northbound.

Smith was taken to a hospital where he later died. Investigators do not know why Smith was in the middle of the street, but they say alcohol appears to be a factor.

Following an autopsy, police believe that Smith could have been hit by two separate vehicles that night. One of the vehicles is possibly a 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call police at 703-792-6500.
