WASHINGTON DC -- Thousands of trucks across Washington DC and Northern Virginia are now at work removing snow and ice from the roads.

Department of Transportation crews in DC and on the other side of the Potomac River have been at work since early Monday evening.

All this is happening as many people prepare to stay home on Tuesday.

"I think I expect the government to do exactly what its doing-- pretreating the roads informing us of what's going on, making sure the residents have clear streets to travel," said Arron Holmes, who lives in Ward 8.

Holmes will work from home during the storm but knows that many people will rely on Metro to get to work.

"I am hoping not to move in a storm like this but I have confidence that Metro is going to be up and running based on the projections," said Holmes.

Those projections vary from anywhere between two inches to one foot of snow.

In Northern Virginia, VDOT crews are responsible for clearing most highways and secondary roads. A spokeswoman for VDOT said neighborhoods in the northern and western sections of Northern Virginia could see the worst of the snow and are warning that it could take a few days to clear all neighborhood streets.

Metro leaders said workers are prepared to clear ice and snow from the tracks. Tuesday will run on a Saturday schedule to leave time for safety measures.

Mayor Muriel Bowser encouraged residents to help their neighbors by spreading rock salt on sidewalks and helping to clear snow to help others.

Bowser said about 20 people have signed up for snow removal help from the city.

The city's emergency plan has also been activated which includes providing warming shelters for the homeless. If you know of anyone who can benefit, dial 311.

Trash service in Washington DC has been cancelled.
