WASHINGTON, DC — Ben’s Chili Bowl unveiled its iconic new mural Wednesday afternoon as a number of celebrities showed up to celebrate the artwork.
The mural showcases 15 African-American legends of entertainment, media, and politics.
Last winter about 30,000 people voted and selected the faces being honored on the mural. The luminaries selected include: Wale, Russ Parr, Dave Chappell, Marion Barry, Eleanor Holmes-Norton, Jim Vance, Prince, Chuck Brown, Taraji P. Henson, Michelle and Barack Obama, Muhammad Ali, Harriet Tubman, Dick Gregory, Roberta Flack, and Donnie Simpson.
The artist who designed this mural U Street Northwest is Aniekan Udofina. She’s known for her paintings showcasing Frederick Douglass and George Washington. Udofina was picked through MuralsDC, a public art and graffiti-prevention initiative that gives local artists the chance to work on their skills while giving the District’s walls a facelift.
The previous mural which was painted in 2012 included President Barack Obama, Donnie Simpson, Chuck Brown, and Bill Cosby. Of those people only Cosby was excluded.
