BETHESDA, Md. – The world’s largest hotel chain will have headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland.
Marriott International announced the $600 million project to build a headquarters in downtown Bethesda is officially underway.
The corporate campus will be located near the intersection of Norfolk ad Wisconsin avenues and is expected to open in 2022.
Mariott says more than 3,500 employee will be based in the 785,000 square-foot office building.
Plans also include a 244-room hotel with meeting space and a neighborhood restaurant to stand next to the office high-rise. There will be a plaza running between the two buildings to connect Woodmont and Wisconsin avenues.
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan and County Executive Ike Leggett joined Marriott executives and developers with Bernstein Cos. and Boston Properties to toss the first shovelfuls of dirt, the symbolic beginning for the multiyear project.
“We could not be more proud that Marriott, this iconic Maryland company, this worldwide brand and the largest hotel company in the world, is headquartered right here in the state of Maryland,” Hogan said.
