PRINCE WILLIAM CO. – A Woodbridge man was arrested and charged after, police say, he beat his roommate’s cat to death.

Police were called to a home in the 1600 block of Mount High Street in Woodbridge on Saturday to investigate an animal cruelty complaint.

The homeowner told police she thought Jean Verboom, 59, had been poisoning a roommate’s cat for the last several months.

Officers learned that the cat had been taken to an emergency veterinarian by its owner the week prior for “suspicious injuries.”

An examination showed the cat had head trauma and liver damage from possible poisoning.

Police say the homeowner set up video surveillance that captured Verboom grabbing the cat, repeatedly punching the cat, and hitting the cat with a blunt object.

When the cat’s owner returned home Saturday, the cat was found dead.

Following the investigation, police say Verboom was arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty.
