FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – A 24-year-old man is now behind bars after, police say, he attacked an officer with a box cutter.

A Fredericksburg Police Officer responded to a domestic disturbance Monday around 5:40 p.m. in the 1900 block of Airport Avenue.

When the officer arrived at the scene, police say Joseph Jackson, of Fredericksburg, assaulted the officer. Police say the officer tried to defend himself by firing his gun at Jackson. Jackson then fled on foot.

The officer was taken to a hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. He was released.

After an extensive search, police say Jackson was found near the intersection of Blue Gray Parkway and Dixon Street and arrested.

Jackson was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries from the gunshot wound.

Virginia State Police charged Jackson with attempted capital murder of a police officer. He is being held without bond.
