CHARLOTTESVILLE – A former detective with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office was sentenced to 23 years in prison Thursday for sexually exploiting two girls, officials say.
Bruce Arlie Harvey, 42, of Reva, Virginia pleaded guilty on August 14 and was sentenced January 25 to 276 months in prison for three counts of transporting a minor across state lines with the intent to engage in criminal sexual acts, three counts of interstate travel with minors with the intent to engage in sexual conduct, and one count of possession of child pornography, according to the Department of Justice.
According to the guilty plea and sentence hearing, Harvey began making sexual advances toward two minor girls while they were students at a karate school that Harvey taught at. Harvey engaged in illegal sexual acts with the girls after he began giving them private karate lessons and travelling with them to competitions. The conduct took place between 1998 and 2007.
Officials say investigators found a video in Harvey’s bedroom closet if one of the victims engaging in a sexual act with Harvey in his home.
