ANNE ARUNDEL CO. – A man driving a work van is behind bars after veering off the road and fatally striking a 12-year-old boy who was walking on a sidewalk Sunday, police say.

Matthew Murphy was walking with his mother and brother near Andrew Hill Road and Bay Green Drive in Arnold when, police say, a van drove off the road and struck the Murphy.

Police say the van then continued through the grass before running off the road and striking a tree.

Murphy was taken to John Hopkins Children’s center where he later died of his injuries, officials say.

The driver, identified as 37-year-old Michael Gauthier, suffered minor injuries. Police say a toxicology screening is pending results.

The preliminary cause of the crash appears to be reckless driving, and failing to remain in a single lane.

Police say the driver was arrested and charged for negligent manslaughter and possessing a controlled dangerous substance.

Investigators may apply for additional charges pending toxicology results.
