WASHINGTON, D.C. – A man accused of a string of sex crimes in both Arlington and the District is an illegal immigrant, ICE confirms.
Arlington County Police say 34-year-old Santiago Rodriquez Campos was arrested by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force on the evening of August 9th at his residence in Fairfax County.
ICE officials confirmed Tuesday that Campos is a Mexican national and has been in the U.S. unlawfully. ICE said in a statement they lodged a detainer on Campos on August 6.
Campos had a preliminary hearing in D.C. Superior Court on Monday. He will remain behind bars pending his next court hearing.
Campos has been charged with sexual battery and indecent exposure for his role in an incident stemming in 2017, but police say he is also linked to a series of indecent exposures and additional charges in Arlington County are pending.
At approximately 12:15 a.m., on August 29, 2017, police say they were dispatched to the report of an indecent exposure.
Upon arrival, it was determined that a female victim was walking in the area when an unknown suspect approached her from behind, exposed his genitals and brushed against her. The suspect then fled the area on foot prior to police arrival.
Following an intensive investigation into the indecent exposure series, Santiago Rodriquez Campos was arrested by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force on the evening of August 9, 2018, at his residence in Fairfax County. He is being held in the District of Columbia where he is facing additional charges.
D.C. Police confirm that Campos was linked to four incidents in D.C., with the first incident dating all the way back to 2016:
- Misdemeanor Sexual Abuse: On Monday, September 5, 2016, at approximately 10:30 pm, the suspect approached the victim in the 1200 block of Potomac Street, Northwest. The suspect sexually assaulted the victim then fled the scene.
- First Degree Sexual Abuse: On Monday, October 26, 2016, at approximately 8:15 pm, the suspect approached the victim in the 1600 block of 33rd Street, Northwest. The suspect sexually assaulted the victim then fled the scene.
- Misdemeanor Sexual Abuse: On Thursday, May 31, 2018, at approximately 10:10 pm, the victim was in the 900 block of 25th Street, Northwest, when the suspect approached her from behind. The suspect grabbed the victim, sexually assaulted her, and then fled the scene.
- Misdemeanor Sexual Abuse: On Sunday, June 3, 2018, at approximately 11:11 pm, the victim was in the 1500 block of P Street, Northwest, when the suspect approached her from behind. The suspect sexually assaulted the victim and then fled the scene.
Court documents reveal that D.C. Police originally arrested Campos back on the charge of wearing hoods or a mask on August 5th. While at the police station, officers offered Campos a styrofoam cup of water, which was later submitted as evidence and tested for DNA.
On August 9th, officers discovered the DNA profile recovered from the cup matched with samples provided from two D.C. incidents, and those incidents matched to two other incidents in D.C.
