ANNE ARUNDEL, Md. — Police say they apprehended the driver of a BMW after he struck and killed a Marine riding a motorcycle, then fled and hid in a nearby quarry.

21-year-old active duty Marine James Walden, who was stationed at Fort Meade, is dead following an accident on Friday. Police say that a BMW driven by Martin Ballinas, 28, spun out of control and crossed the double yellow line, striking Walden on his motorcycle.

Walden was flung from the motorcycle and fatally injured. Ballinas’ passenger, Kevin Velasquez, 22, sustained minor injuries.

Police say speed may have been a factor in this crash. Responding units reportedly found Ballinas about a quarter mile south of the crash scene hiding in a quarry, at which point they apprehended him.

Charges are pending.
