1 dead after scooter collides with police cruiser

WHEATON, Md. – The Montgomery County Police Department reports that one person is dead after a traffic accident involving a motor scooter and a unmarked Montgomery County Police cruiser.

According to officials, the accident happened around 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Officers were called to the intersection of Veirs Mill Road and Norris Drive for reports of a collision. A preliminary investigation revealed that the Sunra Motor Scooter was traveling southbound on Moterrey Drive and attempted to cross over Viers Mill Road. After crossing, police say the scooter driver entered the eastbound lanes and collided with the unmarked police cruiser, which was being driven by an on-duty Montgomery County Police officer.

The operator of the scooter, a 74-year-old man, suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he later died. His identity has not yet been released. The officer was not seriously injured.
