LOUDOUN CO. – A 7-year-old girl is dead and an 8-year-old boy is injured after a tree fell on top of them while they were on a hammock in Loudoun County, officials say.

Investigators say the two children were at a family gathering at a home in Purcellville in the 37800 block of St. Francis Court when the accident happened.

A tree that the hammock was fastened to collapsed and fell forward on top of the children.

The girl was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital while the boy was taken on ground.

Deputies say the 7-year-old girl died from her injuries at the hospital and the other child received minor injuries.

The sheriff’s office says this case was a “tragic accident.”
