STRASBURG, Va. – A Haymarket man was arrested after throwing his 2-year-old son into a creek while running from a police officer.

Strasburg Police say an officer noticed 28-year-old Kyle Sunday driving a vehicle with a small child in his lap near North Massanutten and Thompson streets on Monday.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but police say Sunday got out of the vehicle with the child and fled. The officer then chased after Sunday.

While chasing after Sunday, police say the officer saw him throw the child over an embarkment into a creek.

The officer stopped pursuing Sunday to rescue the child. Police say the child suffered several cuts and scratched and was treated by fire and rescue personnel.

The investigation shows that Sunday stole the vehicle from Kristi Letima, who had been in a previous relationship with, and drove off with their son inside.

Police say officers were able to reunite Letima with her son.

A search warrant for Sunday was executed, and police say they located Sunday hiding out in a residence on Fairchild Drive in Madison Heights.

After multiple attempts to call Sunday out failed, police say officers entered the home and found Sunday in an attic.

Police say Sunday was arrested and faces charges including abuse of a child and traffic violations.
