FRAUD ALERT: Callers pretending to be police officers
WASHINGTON, D.C. – D.C. Police are warning the public about a consumer scam where aggressive callers are pretending to be police officers for financial gain.
Police say the scammers are threatening arrest or prosecution if money is not paid to them immediately. The callers use technology that alters the caller ID to appear as if it is coming from a legitimate law enforcement number.
Officials say most of these scams come from overseas and use services that allow them to use a phone number with any area code they wish.
Police say if you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the police department or any other law enforcement agency and asking for money, immediately hang up. They say you should not engage in conversation or provide any personal information.
Police ask anyone who has been targeted by this scam, to report the incident by completing an online report.
