ORONO, ME. – A first-year University of Maine student died after collapsing during a preseason football workout Tuesday.

18-year-old Darius Minor was a political science major from Locust Grove, Virginia. Minor was a defensive back in his third week of workout when the incident happened.

“The Athletics Department, our student-athletes and the entire campus mourn the loss of this bright and promising member of our community. We ask all to keep him, his family and his friends in your thoughts,” says UMaine President Joan Ferrini-Mundy.

University officials say Minor collapsed on the field around 1:15 p.m., 15 minutes into the supervised light workout. Campus athletics training staff and local first responders were unable to resuscitate him.
