WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Over a dozen volunteers and D.C. police officers gathered outside a 7-11 in Northeast, D.C. on Tuesday to hand out flyers on what has become known as "Relisha Rudd Awareness Day".

"Ultimate goal is case closure. It’s to get that case solved, to get those leads in, and get people to call that tip line. Somebody knows something," said Henderson Long, one of the organizers.

The eight-year-old was last seen alive on March 1, 2014. A few days prior to that, surveillance video placed her at the Holiday Inn on Bladensburg Rd NE with Kahlil Malik Tatum, 51. Tatum was a janitor at D.C. General, the homeless shelter where Rudd lived.

Tatum's body was eventually found in Kenilworth Park in SE DC, while numerous searches around the city have failed to turn up any sign of Rudd.

On the flyers that the group handed out was an updated age-progression photo of Rudd, showing what she would look like now if she is still alive.

"All missing children aren’t deceased. We grow up, we’re here, and to have hope. That is the goal. Relisha Rudd to me, I think, is still alive," said Monique Smith, a volunteer.

Along with keeping Rudd's case in the public eye, volunteers and police were also letting parents know what they need to keep on file in case their children go missing. That being up-to-date photos, dental records, and fingerprints.

"Hopefully that will not be the case for anyone, but in the event that their child or loved one goes missing, they’ll have up to date information," said Metropolitan Police Department Assistant Chief Chanel Dickerson.

Anyone with information about Rudd's case is asked to call police at 202-727-9099 or text 50411.
