ANNE ARUNDEL CO. – A man is in critical condition after a firework exploded in his hands, officials say.

Firefighters responded to the 8300 block of Elvaton Road in Millersville around 9:17 p.m. for the report of a man injured by fireworks.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a 21-year-old man who had suffered severe injuries to both his hands.

Fire officials say the man was taken to a hospital with critical, but non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators say the man was attending a large outdoor party when the incident occurred.

Officials say guests brought illegal fireworks that were purchased in Pennsylvania to the party.

The investigation shows that the man was holding a mortar tube in his hand and dropped a lit mortar into the tube with the other hand. The mortar was upside down, and the explosion within the tube caused catastrophic injuries to both of his hands.

Fire officials say there were no other injuries and no criminal charges were filed.
