WASHINGTON D.C. — Tens of thousands braved the heat to catch the annual fireworks show and ‘A Capitol Fourth’ concert.

This year’s concert featured performances by Jimmy Buffett, The Beach Boys and the Temptations.

Independence Day is celebrated every year on July 4 because that’s the day in 1776 that the Declaration of Independence was signed and adopted by the Continental Congress.

It wasn’t until 1777 that the first Fourth of July celebration helped tie fireworks to the holiday and its been that way ever since.

Many we talked to today say they feel a sense of community and patriotism by joining so many strangers on the National Mall to celebrate the nation’s birthday.
