CALVERT CO. – A large dog that attacked and killed a woman outside her home in Huntingtown, Maryland was fatally shot by a police officer Thursday.

A Maryland State Police trooper responded to the 100 block of Cherry Hill Road around 7:15 in the morning for the report of an animal complaint.

Upon arrival, the trooper found the dog attacking 28-year-old Jenna Sutphin in an overgrown area across from Sutphin’s home. The investigation shows the dog was owned by Sutphin’s fiancé.

Police say the dog started aggressively approaching the trooper. That’s when the trooper shot the dog in fear of his safety, police say. The dog was wounded and ran from the scene.

The dog, identified as a dogo, was found a short distance away from the scene. Police say officers fired again at the dog, killing the animal.

Sutphine was taken to a hospital where, officials say, she was pronounced dead.

The investigation continues.
