Metro introduces new Capitals themed SmarTrip card
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Metro is issuing a limited-edition commemorative SmarTrip card to honor the Washington Capitals for winning the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history.
After the Caps’ Game 4 win, Metro told the Caps and T.J. Oshie, who rode the Metro to both home games in the Stanley Cup finals, they would issue a special SmarTrip if the team brought home the Stanley Cup.
This is the first time a commemorative SmarTrip card has recognized a D.C. sports championship. They are usually reserved for Presidential Inaugurations or other major national events.
“Like the Caps, Metro brings the region together, and this special SmarTrip card is a great way for riders, fans and players to show their Caps pride,” said Metro General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Paul J. Wiedefeld.
Metro submitted several designs for approval, and they obtained permission for the Capitals organization and NHL on Monday to use the photo of the Caps and the Stanley Cup on the ice immediately after their Game 5 victory.
The cards will cost $10.
Fans purchasing the cards, which are only available online at wmata.com, are being asked to allow a few weeks for home delivery.
