Va. man brings loaded gun to Dulles airport, says he “forgot he had it”
DULLES, Va. – A Loudoun County man was cited by airport police after bringing a loaded gun in his carry-on bag to Washington Dulles International Airport.
Officials say the man was caught at a checkpoint with a semi-automatic handgun loaded with 10 bullets. A TSA officer spotted the gun when it appeared on the X-ray monitor. The man told TSA officials he forgot he had his gun on him.
TSA officers called airport police who confiscated the gun and cited the man on a state weapons charge, officials say. There was no impact to airport operations.
Officials say passengers are allowed to travel with firearms in checked baggage if they are properly packaged and declared. Guns must be unloaded, packed in a hard-sided case, locked, and packed separately from ammunition.
This marks the sixth handgun that officers have detected at the airport’s checkpoints this year.
