LANHAM, Md. -- Longtime parishioners of St. Matthias the Apostle Catholic Church in Lanham were shocked to find out that a man had been shot following a private Quince Anos celebration in the parish hall around 1:30 Sunday morning.
They received the news during a Mother’s Day celebration.

“Very, very crazy thing. It’s shocking. You know, happening in the church too. That makes it even more crazy.”, said parishioner Obinna Desmond Mbalisike.

According to the Archdiocese of Washington, the altercation happened during a reception in the parish hall.
Police say two men began fighting in the church bathroom when one of them pulled out a gun- shooting the other in the abdomen and the leg.
Reports say the shooter was immediately subdued by others at the hall until police arrived.
Parishioners now suspect that more security may be in order at the church.

“I’m sure, from now on , there will probably be more security when there’s events to prevent something like that from happening again.”, said parishioner, Uchena Nwokeafor.

The victim in this case has been listed in critical but stable condition.
The suspect is in police custody with charges are pending.
