Ballou HS student, 15, killed in SE DC shooting

UPDATE: The Metropolitan Police Department has identified the victim as Jaylyn Wheeler, 15, of Southeast, D.C.


WASHINGTON, D.C. — A 15-year-old boy was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon in Southeast, D.C.

The victim was a student at Ballou High School.

Metropolitan Police Department Commander Chanel Dickerson said that a school resource officer was patrolling the 600 block of Alabama Ave., SE shortly before 4:00 p.m. when they heard gunshots. She said the officer then saw a group of about 25 students running out of an alley on that block. When the officer arrived in the alley, they found the 15-year-old boy suffering from gunshot wounds.

The boy was transported to a hospital, but later died of his injuries.

His name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Dickerson said police are still investigating a possible motive and suspect or suspects.

No arrests have been made.
