WASHINGTON, D.C. – A woman with a machete was found with her 4-year-old son on the Metro tracks Sunday night, WMATA officials say.

Metro Transit officers responded to McPherson Square around 11 p.m. for the report of an authorized woman on the tracks who, police say, appeared to travelling with a child and carrying a knife.

Officers stopped the 23-year-old woman and her son near the station’s 14th and I Street entrance, officials say.

Transit authorities say neither the woman or the child were injured, and the child was turned over to Child Protective Services.

The woman, who police say is a resident of Mt. Rainier, was taken to a medical facility due to her mental state. Police say charges will be determined following her release.
