Shoplifter shot while grabbing D.C. officer’s gun
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A shoplifting suspect was shot while trying to grab a police officer’s gun, police say.
18-year-old Miguel Smith, of Southeast, tried to steal about $15 worth of groceries from a Safeway Saturday morning, officials say.
Police documents show that an officer tried stopping Smith, which then led to an altercation between the two.
During this fight, police say Smith grabbed at the officer’s gun. As Smith was taking the gun out of the holster, police say the officer grabbed Smith’s hand causing a shot to be fired.
The bullet struck Smith’s lower left leg. Police say Smith fled the scene limping.
Documents show Smith was stopped near the Rhode Island Metro Station where he was arrested and charged with assault on a police officer and theft.
