WASHINGTON, D.C. – An extended family of 14 are displaced after a two and a half story home caught fire in Northwest, D.C. Thursday night.

Firefighters and EMS responded to the fire at the 6400 block of 16th Street, Northwest around 9 p.m.

The fire was contained to the second floor and attic before being knocked down, fire officials say.

Officials determined the cause of the fire to be electrical and accidental in nature.

There was no evidence of working smoke detectors on the second floor or in the attic, and officials say it is due to luck and timing that the family was able to escape the burning home.

No injuries were reported.
