MONTGOMERY CO. – A 22-year-old woman was arrested Friday for murdering her 80-year-old great-grandmother in her home, police say.

Shannon Lozano of Wheaton is now behind bars for the first-degree murder of Doris Elizabeth Shelton.

Police responded to the 10500 block of Cascade Place in Wheaton around 3:20 p.m. after the victim’s husband came home to find Shelton unresponsive and not breathing. Police say they confirmed Shelton was deceased upon arrival.

An investigation revealed there was apparent trauma to Shelton’s body. Officials say Shelton’s great-granddaughter, Lozano, was developed as a suspect in the death. A lookout was placed for Lozano and Maryland-National Capital Park Police Officers arrested her a short distance from the home.

After being interviewed, Lozano implicated she was involved in the assault of her great-grandmother. Police say Lozano was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. She is being held without bond.

Shelton’s body has been transported to The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to confirm the cause and manner of death.
