Body found in Md. identified as missing man from August 2017
HOWARD CO. – The remains of a body found in the woods in Allegany County last month have been identified as a man who went missing from Howard County in August 2017, Howard County Police say.
The body has been identified as 28-year-old David Gipson Smith, officials say. Smith’s remains were discovered February 25 by hikers in Green Ridge State Forest in Flintstone, Maryland.
The state medical examiner has not yet determined Smith’s cause of death or time of death, but was able to identify Smith through dental records.
Police say Smith disappeared August 6 after coming to Maryland from New Jersey to visit an acquaintance. When he didn’t return home by August 12, Smith’s family notified police.
Smith’s mother, Julia Gipson Smith, created a GoFundMe page to help raise money to help cover personal detective and attorney fees. On the GoFundMe page, Mrs. Smith also details in her words the tragic story of how her son went missing.
