Reston man arrested for killing his dog

FAIRFAX CO. – A Reston mas has been arrested for shooting and killing his dog, Fairfax County police say.

Police say they found the dog deceased last summer at the Northern Virginia Archers Club Range after someone reported finding a dead dog that appeared to be shot with a firearm.

The dog, a shepherd mix, had a collar, but no tags or any identifying information. Further investigation determined the dog did have a microchip, which led officers to medical records and a possible owner.

Officials say evidence uncovered during their searches led to charges against the dog’s owner, 61-year-old Mark Cochrane.

Cochrane was arrested by Animal Protection Police Wednesday and charged with animal cruelty, hunting in a prohibited place, and dumping an animal on private property.
