Several fires across region on New Year’s Day

ANNANDALE, VA -- Firefighters across the Washington, D.C.-region dealt with several fires on New Year's Day, including one that was fatal.

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department reported they responded around 4:20 a.m. to a fire in the 4900 block of Columbia Rd. in the Annandale section of Fairfax County. During the initial search of the single-story home, a 94-year-old man was found who had succumbed to his injuries.

He has since been identified as Lewis C. Spessard.

The fire remains under investigation.

D.C. Fire and EMS responded around 12:45 a.m. to a fire at a row house in the 4500 block of 5th St. NW. No injuries were reported.

D.C. firefighters then tackled a blaze at an apartment in the 3200 block of Buena Vista Terr. SE at around 2:50 a.m. No residents were injured, but one firefighter suffered minor injuries when they fell through a floor of the building.

24 people were displaced by that fire and were being helped by the National Capital Region Red Cross.

In Prince George's County, the fire department responded to a fire at a home in the 6600 block of Lacona Street in District Heights around 11:46 a.m. Initial reports were of three people trapped in the home, but it was later determined that they were not inside and were accounted for.
