Child injured in shooting in Prince George’s Co.

PRINCE GEORGE’S CO., Md. – The Prince George’s County Police Department says it is investigating a shooting that left a child critically injured.

Officials say police arrived on the scene in the 300 block of Bellamy Way around 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday evening for reports of a shooting. At this time, police say a 33-year-old man was watching the 11-year-old boy and while putting his weapon away, the weapon misfired and struck the child. According to officials, the boy suffered an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body.

The man, who police say is former military, transported the boy to the hospital at Joint Base Andrews. From there, doctors were able to stabilize him enough to transport him to another hospital, where he is currently undergoing surgery.

Police believe that the victim appears to have been accidentally shot. The 33-year-old man is currently cooperating and being questioned by police officers.
