ANNE ARUNDEL, Md. — A pilot had to make an emergency landing on I-97 this afternoon after an engine failure.

The plane took off from Tipton Airfield in Fort Meade, and the pilot was trying to return to that airfield when Maryland State Police say he “lost engine RPMs” and had to land on an exit ramp from Route 665 from Southbound I-97.

No injuries were reported. Traffic cams showed that the plane, which reportedly struck a guardrail on landing, had come apart into several pieces.

Around 5 p.m., MSP said that the ramp would be re-opened “shortly.”
