DEWEY BEACH, Del. — Two D.C. men are dead after a man reportedly suffering a medical event crashed his SUV outside of a Dewey Beach restaurant.

The driver is a 61-year-old man from New York who was driving down Coastal Highway when an “acute medical event [caused] him to black out”, say police.

The victims, James Walton, 53, and Richard Chittick, 58, were straddling their bicycles outside of the Starboard Bar and Restaurant when the driver’s 2017 Chevy Suburban rode up onto the sidewalk, hitting them and then striking a utility pole, continuing into the restaurant parking lot and hitting an unattended vehicle.

The victims, both from D.C., were pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators are requesting that anyone who may have witnessed the crash or the involved vehicle prior to the crash to please contact Cpl. N. DeMalto of the Collision Reconstruction Unit, Troop 7 at 302-703-3267.
