COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- University of Maryland Police sent out a community alert around 10:30 Saturday night about a shooting in the 7500 block of Rhode Island Avenue.

According to the Prince George’s County Police Department, officers arrived on scene around 8:20pm to find two men injured.

One was shot and taken to the hospital and the second man was assaulted.
Both are said to have non-life-threatening injuries.

According to one student, both attend the University of Maryland and the gunshot victim is said to have been shot in the leg.

Details are sparse, but other students living in the area seem to have mixed feelings about their safety here.

“I don’t think there’s that much concern if you’re keeping yourself out of trouble. If you’re keeping yourself out of bad crowds and like, you know where to walk during certain times. I think UMPD does a pretty good job when they need to and I think a lot of it falls on students being careless.”, said student, Zachary Felch.

Luca Riitano lives in off-campus dorms nearby and said, “Other people who might be on the first floor, they might get their windows broken in, but fortunately the doors lock automatically when you close them. So, I feel pretty safe on the third floor, but I wouldn’t go walking around this area at night. I always get notifications on my phone.”

Detectives are still working to figure out a motive in this case.
