ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The advisory group looking into renaming Jefferson Highway agreed that the city of Alexandria and county of Arlington should go with Richmond Highway as an alternative.

The stretch of Highway 1 within Alexandria city limits is set to be renamed to disassociate the road from the president of the Confederacy.

At a meeting Monday, the public members of an ad hoc committee discussed the possibilities of passing on a recommendation based on the most popular submissions to an online survey held from August to mid-September.

Some of those names included:
• Abraham Lincoln
• Alexandria-Arlington
• Barack Obama
• Heather Heyer
• Mildred and Richard Loving
• Patrick Henry
• Richmond
• U.S. Route 1

Each of those names got more than 100 votes out of more than 1,000 suggestions.

According to the City of Alexandria, this could be the final meeting of the advisory group charged with researching the issue and delivering a recommendation on a new name to city leaders to the city manager. A November vote on the issue by the city council could follow.

Arlington County leaders have yet to decide if a name change is needed.
