WALDORF, Md. -- The entire neighborhood of Yorktown Drive in Waldorf is grieving following the accidental drowning of a two-year-old boy at a private daycare shortly before 10am.

“I’m sorry for the family who lost their kid. No, no I don’t know… how can you have a pool, especially if you have a daycare… all that stuff is supposed to be secured.”, said neighbor and parent, Gina Ortiz.

According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, the licensed daycare provider was watching three children when she opened the back door to let the dog out.

Sheriffs deputies said that she closed the door and walked away for a few minutes.
When she returned, they said that she noticed the little boy missing and then found him in the pool. She then immediately began CPR until EMS crews arrived.

The boy was later pronounced dead at Southern Maryland Hospital.

Lawan Mackall lives next door to the daycare and says the owner is a good woman who loved all the kids she cared for.

“She’s a wonderful lady, my kids love her. I’ve known her since I’ve been living here, I’ve been here for five years. Like I said, I don’t know what happened earlier, but I just… it’s a hurtful feeling you know. I send my condolences to the family and also my heart goes out to her.”, said Mackall.

There are no charges against the owner of the daycare at this point, but the Sheriff’s Office is still investigating.
