70-year-old man drowns in Fairfax canoe accident

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — A Clifton man is dead after a boating accident in Burke Lake Park that happened Friday afternoon.

A canoe capsized around 2:00 p.m. the afternoon of August 25 with three people on board. An adult and child were rescued, but James Peith, 70, had slipped out of sight in the water.

Members of the police and fire departments and Marine Patrol used helicopters and boats to search for Peith over the course of hours. Using sonar equipment, they found his body  around 6 p.m.
