CULPEPER COUNTY, Va. — Two deputies shot and killed a suspect who ‘presented a deadly threat’ late Monday night near the intersection of Sperryville Pike and Griffinsburg Road, reports the Culpeper Sheriff’s Office.

Around 11 p.m., the deputies tried to initiate a traffic stop after identifying the driver as Eric Clark, 43, who was the suspect in a domestic assault at a local home earlier that evening.

They pulled Clark over, but say that he refused to stop, and a police chase ensued. Two other deputies joined the chase, and it ended several minutes later when Clark stopped at the intersection of Route 522 and Griffinsburg Road. When they approached Clark’s car, an incident occurred that led to be him being fatally shot.

The suspect’s shotgun was recovered at the scene.

“I’m so grateful that our deputies are safe. I’m deeply saddened by what they were forced to do and pray for comfort for everyone affected by this incident,” said Sheriff Scott Jenkins.

The deputies are on modified duty as this incident is investigated.
