UPPER MARLBORO, MD -- Governor Larry Hogan is now calling for an independent investigation into claims of graduation fraud and grade fixing in the Prince George’s County Public School system and other lawmakers are also weighing in.
This comes after allegations of graduation and procurement fraud were leveled against PGCPS CEO, Dr. Kevin Maxwell’s administration.
Maryland State Senator C. Anthony Muse, who just announced his run for the Prince George’s County Executive seat, gave his thoughts, saying he would bring in the election process to select PGCPS officials, if elected.
“We want our kids to graduate, but we want them operating at their intellectual capacity which says I am and I have completed, not just pushed through schools.”, said Senator Muse.
In a letter to the Maryland State Board of Education, Gov. Hogan requested a “complete, thorough and exhaustive investigation” into allegations, including graduation and procurement fraud. He also ensured “that any and all whistleblowers receive full protections under the law.”
Sylvia Price is a parent with two kids attending county high schools.
While she says her children work hard to earn their grades, she says more parents need to get involved so they can be better informed.
“As a parent”, says Sylvia, “we have to take it upon ourselves to be more proactive in our schools to make sure that our kids are doing what they’re supposed to do and attending meetings when we need to. That’s what I try to do.”
In his letter, Gov. Hogan says he is deeply troubled by the allegations that have been brought forward, pointing to testimony from teachers and guidance counselors referenced by Senator Muse, who says his responsibility is to the people who elected him.
“My job is to figure out, am I doing a disservice to my young people in my district by overlooking this and just saying, oh it’s not real. No, something’s wrong I believe, to what extent, we don’t know.”, says Sen. Muse.
As for a response from PGCPS, CEO Dr. Kevin Maxwell has said repeatedly that the allegations made against the school system are false.
