Richard Collins III

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sunday, police identified University of Maryland murder victim as 23-year-old Richard Collins III.

Friends of the victim told DCW50 that the Bowie State student was scheduled to graduate Tuesday, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army last Thursday.

Police say Collins was murdered while waiting for an Uber at University of Maryland College Park.

The suspect, UMD student Sean Urbanski, is charged with first and second degree murder.

Police say seconds before the murder, witnesses saw Urbanski yelling and screaming as he approached Collins.

“And then he said to the victim, step left, step left if you know what is good for you, the victim looked at him puzzled and said no. It was then that Sean Urbanski stabbed the victim in his chest,” explained UMD Chief of Police David Mitchell.

Investigators say Urbanski is a member of an anti-Semitic Facebook group, so the FBI is stepping in to investigate this murder as a possible hate crime.
