WASHINGTON, D.C. — A six-year-old boy from Southeast is dead after he was fatally struck by a car on Wednesday night, his birthday.

Xavier Luckey, who was a student at Hendley Elementary School, was hit by a car while crossing the street in the 4300 block of Livingston Road around 7 p.m. on Wednesday. There was no crosswalk, and the driver struck the boy in the travel lanes.

Police chief Peter Newsham said in a Periscope that police had custody of the driver and interviewed him about the crash after it happened.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Xavier Luckey and the Hendley Elementary School family,” said Markus Batchelor, a D.C. State Board of Ed. member in a statement on the death. “We can’t help but think of what Xavier could have been and would have achieved.”

At this time, the accident is under investigation by the Major Crash Investigation Unit. Police ask that anyone with information about this case to call 202-727-9099.
