FREDERICKSBURG, VA —  After having finished working the overnight shift, Merry Thomas, showed her friend and co-worker how to play the lottery.

Both went to a Giant Food at 35 Town and Country Road in Fredericksburg and Merry showed her friend Julie how to work the self-service machine and how to scan a ticket to see if it’s a winner.

Once they scanned their tickets — both women won. Julie won $12 and Merry won $1 million dollars.

“I’ve been freaking out since then!” Merry said as she claimed her prize.

Merry won the top prize in the 20X the Money game. The Virginia Lottery says, Merry had to choices on how to claim her prize — she would either take the full $1 million prize over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $630,915 before taxes. She chose the cash option.

The store receives a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

Merry said she has no immediate plans for her winnings.
