HOWARD COUNTY, Md. — Police say several officers were involved in the shooting of a man in Elkridge after he attacked his estranged wife and then the officers, strangling one of them before he was shot to death.

They responded to the scene after a 911 call early Saturday morning from a woman they say reported her estranged husband, William Mathis, was at her home. Police say she had a protective order against Mathis, 41.

The woman said in her call that Mathis was under the influence of PCP. Dispatchers heard her screaming for help as he reportedly broke into the home, after which she dropped the phone. There were three small children inside the house at the time.

Officers arrived on the scene and said they found the rear glass door shattered and were confronted by Mathis, who then attacked them. According to the officers, he strangled one of them before struggling with the others. Mathis was then fatally shot.

Two officers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The woman and her children were unharmed.

Howard County Police have not provided any additional information about the suspect, the officers, or the details of the fatal shooting. They say that information is forthcoming.
