ROCKVILLE, Md. – Tuesday, 32 year old Scott Tomaszewski was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

In September, Tomaszewski pleaded guilty to murdering his neighbors, Dick and Jodie Vilardo.

“This was not a burglary gone bad, this was not a burglary gone bad.  This was a premeditated execution of a man who was helpless, sleeping in his bed,” expressed States Attorney John McCarthy after the sentencing.

On Mother’s Day 2015, Tomaszewski broke into the Vilardo’s home while they slept.   Tomaszewski confessed to using a machete to stab Dick Vilardo more than 40 times and nearly decapitated Dick’s wife, Jodie, before stealing jewelry.

Just hours later, investigators say the killer was on a flight to the west coast, where he boarded a cruise to Alaska for a family vacation.

Meanwhile, back in Rockville, Katie Vilardo found her parents lying in a pool of blood.

Fighting through tears in court, Katie revisited the morning she found them.

“My parents were not what happened to them, my parents were fabulous people,” cried Katie.

Dozens in the courtroom let out a sigh of relief when Tomaszewski, a man many of them grew up with, received the maximum sentence for the Vilardo murders.
