MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. – Authorities report a fatal accident that occurred early Thursday morning in Montgomery County, Maryland.

According to the U.S. Park Police, they received a call shortly before 1:00 a.m. regarding a car on fire on the Clara Barton Parkway, north of the Chain Bridge and south of Glen Echo. When officers arrived on the scene, they found the car near Lock 6. One occupant was able to escape the vehicle and was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The other occupant was found deceased in the vehicle.

At this time, there is no information on the identities of the vehicle’s two occupants.

Officials say that a preliminary investigation revealed that the car had been traveling eastbound and had crossed into oncoming lanes. At that point, it came off of its wheels, either flipping or tipping, and struck a tree where it caught on fire.

The parkway was closed for about five hours while authorities investigated. All lanes are now open.
